Each year thousands of screaming fans pack gyms across America to watch college basketball enjoy its “March Madness” tournament that crowns the #1 team in NCAA basketball. The winners of these games play again on Saturday. The winner plays the top-rated number 1 seed. Most years, one person fills out a bracket perfectly. March Madness 2010 commences when the NCAA Mens tournament bracket finally hits the press. Better seeds are supposed to be placed closer to the region that they inhabit.
A selection committee of writers and analysts meet to decide which teams are worthy of making the tournament. It is a very complex process that is studied by thousands of humans and computers. Many factors play a role in a teams selection including their record, Ratings Index Percentage , strength of schedule, and wins against top 25 and top 50 teams and losses against opponents who are deemed inferior. More successful teams figure out if they received a seed that was equal to their performance. Many bubble teams, those teams that are unsure if they will qualify for the NCAA basketball team, learn their fates.
The 2010 NCAA Mens Basketball tournament begins on Selection Sunday when the brackets are released with 65 teams qualifying. Fourteen cities will host games from March 16th until April 5th. Andy Katz talks to former selection committee chair Gary Walters about what is being done in preparation for the selection of the field for the NCAA tournament.
