I want to start playing Basketball but everybody else is really good?
I want to start playing basketball but everybody in my grade that plays it is really good. I’m 12 years old, 5′ 3”, and i am actually pretty good at basketball. what can i do to improve and make the team?? i have a basketball hoop in my yard but i dont know pretty much anything about basketball!
I’m 13 and 5’9″ and I have always been the best in basketball. I have never really practiced because I was so much better than everyone else. Now, a lot of people have caught up to me because they worked hard and practiced. I practice a lot now and always wonder how good I would have been if I really pushed myself. It is never too late to start. Don’t hold yourself back because people are better than you, trust me, its not as hard as it looks to catch up. My coach told us this story: When he was in high school there was a lot of really good players. A lot of them went on to play in college. Anyway, there was a new guy who really wanted to play. He tried out freshman year and didn’t make it, he tried out in sophmore year and didnt make it, but he didnt give up and his jr. year his work payed off and he made the team. This story proves even in highschool its not to late to start, much less junior high. Good luck and work hard! You can catch up and become the star!
As far as skills, heres what our coach has us do to improve on fundamentals (he has coached varsity basketball for 12 years so he know what hes talking about):
1. Work on layups and footwork- do layups on each side of the basket and make sure you only take two steps. Aim for the top corner of the square. If you hit it right the ball goes in every time.
2. Work on shots, go around the basket and take shots. see what your best shot is and work to perfect it.
3. Get in good shape. Coaches love players that work hard and are in good shape. A lot of girls made my school team that didnt know how to play at all but they were in great shape from cross country.
4. Get familiar with the game. Learn the rules and watch some games on tv. Like you can only be in the key for 3 seconds and you can only hold the ball for 5.
5. Strengths- once you know your strengths and weaknesses you can work on making your weaknesses you strengths.
6. Defense- defense is the most important part of the game. Being in good shape is really helpful on defense. the only way you can practice it is to play eith someone else. Make sure to move fast and not reach.
Good Luck! I hope I helped you out! Don’t give up I promise it is worth it! Basketball is so much fun and I wouldn’t be able to live without it
