Jamie Dixon and his Pittsburgh Panthers had a really successful regular season in 2010-11. Despite taking part in a challenging Big East schedule the team ended up with a 15-3 record in conference play.
They defeated Connecticut handily in the final regular season contest, but lost to the Huskies by two points in the Big East tourney. Pitt didn’t have much success in the NCAA tournament either, getting beat in the second round to Butler.
The 2011-12 edition of the Pittsburgh Panthers will have only two starters returning. Regardless, coach Dixon has established a winning foundation and the school has a history of reloading when losing superb players.
Backcourt
The Panther’s guard play starts with Asthon Gibbs. Gibbs opted out of declaring for the NBA draft, but withdrew due to the likelihood of a lockout. Last season he averaged almost 17 points per game on 49% 3-point shooting.
Travon Woodall will take over for Brandon Wanamaker. Woodall is an excellent defender who is going to have to live up to the hype of being an excellent distributor.
Providing depth will be Cameron Wright, Durand Johnson, and John Johnson.
Frontcourt
The Panther’s biggest losses came in the inside that will probably be devoid of Gilbert Brown and Gary McGhee. Even so, the Panthers do get some stable players back to go together with some top-level recruits.
Nasir Robinson will bring the expertise to the floor. Last year he contributed 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds for every contest, but he should get more minutes this season.
Khem Birch was a McDonald’s All-American and one of the best post players coming out of high school. Malcolm Gilber was also wanted by a good deal of schools as a result of his rebounding and shot blocking capabilities.
Supplying the Panthers with some extra minutes will probably be Dante Taylor, JJ Moore, and Talib Zanna.
